Buying and Wearing Maternity Wear

...You can probably make your normal clothing work for you with only a few adjustments; unbutton your jeans, borrow your partner’s shirts or buy non-maternity clothing in a bigger size. Never forget your boobs though. They will grow throughout your pregnancy and it is never too early to have them properly measured. This is one delicious part of you that you don’t want to squash!

...At some point those bigger sizes just aren’t going to do it and they aren’t going to flatter you at all. Generally, you should start wearing maternity clothes at some point during months 4 to 5; look on it as an excellent excuse to enhance your wardrobe. After all, at this special time you really are worth it!

Remember that it will also take a few months to return to your pre-pregnancy size so you may be wearing your maternity clothes for 12 months plus.

aternity buying style basics

  • Size: generally stick to the style you were pre-pregnancy. Good quality maternity clothing is designed this way.
  • Focus: if you want to, draw attention away from your bump by drawing attention to other areas. Your cleavage will be fantastic!
  • Shape: wear clothes that do fit your shape properly. Maternity wear is designed to do this. It gives you a great shape whilst also giving you room to grow. Wrap dresses for example are an excellent way of showing off your figure whilst also being comfortable. Tops with extra length are great as they fully cover your bump.
  • Baggy: leading on from above, don’t think that baggy is best. You may be inclined to cover everything up as you grow but more clingy clothes will make you look slimmer. Plus, they allow people to see that it is pregnancy that is giving you your new shape!
  • Colours: dark colours are more slimming but you don’t have to wear them all the time. If you love wearing baby pink or royal blue, wear them. Don’t change your look entirely because you are pregnant. You are still the same you.
  • Patterns: wearing one colour tends to make you look longer and slimmer but, again, be true to your own style. A beautiful patterned top with your best maternity jeans will make you feel great.
  • Fabrics: go for something with lycra/elastane in it as these are great for stretch and will help to flatter your shape. Cotton is great for the summer and super soft. Often a cotton mix is better as it has the benefit of stretch and does not stain so readily. Linen is very cooling but may not flatter your shape so well.

Just remember that you need to feel comfortable within your new shape. Stick to your favourite colours and styles where possible. Wear what makes you feel Bumpalicious!
